Back on the sidelines

December 19, 2010 - Indianapolis, Ind. : Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Austin Collie, left, falls to the turf, apparently knocked out, after taking a hit by Jacksonville linebacker Daryl Smith on a second-quarter pass play during the Colts' 34-24 win over the Jaguars on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium. Collie scored two touchdowns in the first half and was in his first game back with the Colts after suffering a concussion earlier in the season. Photo by Chad Ryan.

After not covering much pro football this year, I found myself back on the sidelines at Lucas Oil Stadium on Sunday, Dec. 19. I had only photographed the Indianapolis Colts' preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers and then Manning Bowl when the New York Giants rolled into town back in September. Needless to say, I was itching to get back at it.

The Colts certainly did what they had to do to win that game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, but in the process they might have taken yet another hit to the team. Colts receiver Austin Collie was on track to have a career day after catching eight passes, two of which were for touchdowns in the first half. But in the second quarter, Collie took a brutal hit to the head from Jacksonville linebacker Daryl Smith as he tried to make a catch in tight coverage. Collie appeared to have been knocked out immediately, and his helmet bounced of the turf. Collie was playing in his first game back after suffering a concussion from a similar situation just about a month earlier.

I shot the play from about 25 yards away, and judging by his body in this picture I'm saying he was unconscious before he hit the floor.

This was a scary moment because Collie was motionless for several minutes before training staff got him turned over and moving again. Reports are out now that Collie has another concussion, and I have to wonder not only will he play again this year, but if he'll ever play again. I'm guessing after watching that hit, his wife would prefer him to find another line of work. But players want to play, and Collie is certainly a football player.

Galloping Gobbler 2010

I photographed the 2010 edition of the Galloping Gobbler four-mile run/walk at the University of Saint Francis in Fort Wayne, Ind. The Gobbler has become a Thanksgiving Day tradition, and more than 2,000 participants braved the rain and wind this morning to burn off some calories running through Lindenwood Cemetery.

Trying not to be a slacker

It appears I am once again guilty of letting the blog updates slide to the rear of my list of things to do. I could give excuses, but what good would that do any of us. I think we can move on from this.

So, I have been ridiculously busy shooting, writing and pursuing my outdoor adventures in the last three months. The shooting part has been OK. I’m working myself out of a little funk right now in that department. The new hip has been a little slow to get back to full speed, and when I’m shooting the same things over and over, I’ll admit it gets a little tough to see things in a new way. But I’m starting to get back to where I want to be.

The writing is, well, writing. That’s all I have to say about that.

The outdoor adventures have been great. I’ve been hunting a very nice whitetail buck and have been close to taking him. I did miss a shot during the archery season, which is definitely not normal for me. Then I let him slide at 40 yards during the opening day of the firearms season because I had my 14-year old son with me. I wanted my son to get a shot at the big boy, but he couldn’t get in position so we let him go. The next time there’s a close encounter, it will be the last.

In any case, I’ve posted a few pics that I think are OK from the last three months. Take care an Happy Holidays to everyone.

Magic Hour

Last night (that's Monday, May 24th, for the two or three of you who''ll read this any day other than today) I shot and wrote about a softball sectional game in Angola, Ind., between Fort Wayne high school teams Bishop Dwenger and Concordia Lutheran. It was a good, close game most of the way through. Bishop Dwenger features the state's leading hitter, Andrea Filler, who's batting average was .723 going into the game, and Concordia featured Angie Doerffler, who hit .638 going into the game. Filler broke the 0-0 tie with a two-RBI double in the fifth inning, and the Saints went on to win 7-1. Filler, also the Saints' No. 1 pitcher, picked up the win and allowed just three hits - all to Doerffler, a Valparaiso recruit.

My editor wanted me to write a feature-style piece instead of a bland game story, and I gave it the good ole college try. I actually liked the end result, that is, until I read the copy editor's version of my story this morning. Nothing like changing a carefully-constructed lede to straight AP style to ruin the feeling of a story. Anyway ...

So after the game I strolled down I-69 south back to Fort Wayne and decided to stop to shoot some updated photos at the new Parkview North construction project. Magic hour, the time just after sundown but not quite dark, was fast approaching and I like the set up to get photos of the shell of the building. I wish I could have shot from a higher location, but you take what you get, especially in these run-and-gun situations. So, in any case, I thought the paper could use pics of the building, and I wanted to get something before they wrapped the outside. The picture, shown above, isn't exactly what I wanted, but doing something like this makes for a much better design in the paper than using a standard building mugshot shot in plain, boring daylight. It's these kinds of nights where I wish I could just make pictures and not worry about having to write stories. I could do a lot more of these on-the-fly projects that I think our readers would appreciate. Oh well, on to writing something else ...

Game 2 video clip

Here is a short, roughly-cut video of some clips from Game 2 of the Turner Cup Finals between the Fort Wayne Komets and the Flint Generals. Fort Wayne won this game 2-1, an the goal in the video was scored by Matt Syroczynski in the second period, tying the game at 1-1. I'll put together a little more polished video with clips from all the games in the series after everything is wrapped up. Go to News-Sentinel.com for all of our Turner Cup Championship coverage with stories by Blake Sebring and multimedia by me.

Turner Cup Game 3 Pics

May 12, 2010 - Flint, Mich. - Flint's Jamie Schaafsma, center, celebrates after beating Komets defenseman Guy Dupuis, right, to slide the puck in the near side of the net for the game-winning goal at 12:52 of the first overtime to give the Generals a 7-6 win in Game 3 of the Turner Cup championship series on Wednesday at Perani Arena in Flint, Mich. Fort Wayne leads the best-of-seven series 2-1 with Game 4 scheduled for Friday in Flint. Photo by Chad Ryan.

Here are a few photos from Wednesday's Game 3 of the Turner Cup championship series in Flint, Mich. After the Flint Generals went up 2-0 in the first period, Fort Wayne Komets forward Matt Syroczynski responded with two straight goals to tie it up. Flint scored again to take the lead, and the shoot out was on. Syroczynski scored again for the hat trick in the first period. From then on it was back and forth with both teams trading goals until Justin Chwedoruk scored what many thought would be the game winner for the Komets in the third period.

Down by a goal, Flint put on a huge rush in the last minute of the third period and managed to keep the puck in the Komets' zone on successive clear-out attempts with 15 seconds left. Flint center Bryan Smolinski picked up the puck near the left point, made a move to the inside and buried it past Nick Boucher with 9.8 seconds to go. Overtime.

The Generals killed off a penalty to start the overtime, and the play slowed a bit. Fort Wayne had several quality chances to score in the overtime, but it was Flint's Jamie Schaafsma who picked up a rolling puck behind Boucher, who thought he had covered it up. Schaafsma skated the puck behind Fort Wayne's net, drawing Boucher to the other side to protect against a wrap-around, then Schaafsma made a move back to the near side and slipped it the open net at 12:52 of the first overtime period for the game winner. Flint won its first game of the series, making the best-of-seven finals 2-1 in favor of Fort Wayne with Game 4 scheduled for Friday in Flint.

The last few weeks

Just a few photos from the last couple of weeks. Nothing too exciting, just some high school tennis, baseball, a visit with Dallas Cowboys defensive end Anthony Spencer and Fort Wayne Komets hockey. The Komets are up 1-0 in their Turner Cup championship series over the Flint Generals, which mean just three more wins to take their third-straight IHL championship.

Turkey Hunting Video

This is a short video I threw together of my buddy Tom's turkey hunt on opening day of the 2010 Indiana spring turkey season last week. This hunt takes place in northeast Indiana at the Fawn River Deer Camp where there is an abundance of wild turkeys. I've counted as many as 50 birds together at a time on the property on several occasions.

Now, I should mention that when Tom and I hunt together things don't get too serious. I usually send most of my time in the blind laughing too hard to get anything done. This here isn't your TV style of hunting video. Since this is our first attempt Tom didn't get too crazy, and I didn't have to cut out too much in the editing room. I originally had some more creative titles to put in this clip, but opted for something a little more conservative.

Due to my wife being on the verge of going into labor at any time, Tom and I only had one day to get a hunt on film, so he settled on shooting a jake early that morning. The next morning another hunter took a tom with a 10.5-inch beard and 1.25-inch spurs out of the exact same spot.

From my car

Ok, well, I have to say that being stuck at home for most of the last six weeks about drove me batty, so I went out last week and drove around town looking for spots to shoot something, anything just to get a camera back in my hands. So I took pictures of birds, some common, some not so common, and even the first bald eagle to reside in our part of Indiana for 90 years. The point is I got out shooting again.

Here are a few photos that I shot from the front seat of my car, well, my 4x4. But due to my limited mobility after surgery, I had to let the car do the walking for me.

Changes are Coming

During the last several weeks I've been out of commission after having hip replacement surgery in February. For a good portion of that time my mobility was, well, non-existent. Except for my trips to physical therapy appointments there was little else I could do other than watch movies and surf the internet. So it goes without saying that I spent a lot of time on the web.

During that time a few things became clear to me. I came to the conclusion that my days working for a newspaper are numbered. The industry as a whole is falling apart, I work for an afternoon paper, which are nearly extinct, and corporate policies dictate that when profit margins don't meet double digit expectations, content producers - not managers - lose their jobs. I've worked hard to increase my personal value by taking on writing duties and producing multimedia projects to boost my story-telling skills. I leaned when the last round of job cuts came along, my boss tossed my name in the ring. His boss, recognizing all that I do for our newspaper, overrode that decision. So, my extra efforts saved my job, but for how long, really? I will be prepared for the inevitability that next time, I won't be so lucky.

In light of the previous revelation the next thing that became clear to me is that I really need to work on my footprint on the world wide web. I purchased a flash-based website template and put together a website PickChad.com that was functional, but nothing special. The purpose was to get my name out there with the hopes of landing the occasional freelance job. I had some assignments roll in, but I learned that other people in my area were getting jobs that I was never considered for. Problem is, editors couldn't find me, and if they can't find me they can't at least consider hiring me. This blog has helped seriously in that regard, but only for those searching me by name. It became time for a new plan.

I have begun work on a new website that will be a total solution that comprises the main site, the ability to search and purchase images from my entire archive and the blog all rolled into one comprehensive package. Though the site is not yet live, it's home will be RyanVisuals.com.

So, now the quest is to prepare myself for the transition from staff photographer to independent contractor, offering services producing still photographs, audio slideshows and video productions for both editorial and commercial clients. I look forward to and embrace these new challenges.

One other thing that became clear is that I can't wait to get back to shooting, because I just can't handle sitting around.

More to come ...

Going on the DL for awhile

One week ago today, I stepped off the jet that brought me home from shooting my second Super Bowl, a 31-17 victory for the New Orleans Saints over the Indianapolis Colts. Today, however, I took my first steps in a hospital room a day after receiving a brand new replacement hip. Originally, I was supposed to have a Birmingham Hip Resurfacing surgery, but once the surgeon got on the inside he determined that my hip socket was too far gone to save it.

This will be quite a transition for me being on the disabled list for 2-3 months since I am generally very active, but I'm told things will be a lot better when I'm back to 100 percent.

I'll plan to post new material once I get back to shooting again, but I'm not sure when that will be. Take care and thanks for stopping by.
