Snow Day

After a major snow storm caused blizzard conditions and dumped more than seven inches of snow on the Fort Wayne area, government agencies, schools and businesses closed down for the better part of two days. Personallly, I spent the first part of the week on my couch with a nasty case of the flu that I must have picked up during my travel back home from Miami.
As I shoveled more than two feet deep snow drifts out of my driveway, the morning sun started to rise and the skies were clear. It was a nice start to the day. My wife had hot chocolate waiting for me when I was finished. I finally convinced her after twenty minutes that I didn't want her to help me shovel snow. She was bound and determined to help, but I asked her to stay inside where it was warm. She's as stubborn as I am and much better looking.
I ventured to work under the bright sun and saw that the light was beautiful. I knew I had to go out and make photos of people dealing with the snow, and the light was just right. I made a few decent pictures, but not what I was hoping for. I met co-worker Steve Linsenmayer at a coffee shop where we worked and transmitted our images back to the office. I was determined to get better pictures, and I knew the light at the end of the day would be fantastic.

After I left the office around 5:00 I decided to head off to Franke Park. The west side of the old soap box derby hill and its countless sledders bask in the glorious golden glow of the setting sun. Nobody cared that the temperature was less than 15 degrees. We had sunshine after two days of blizzard. Luckily, there were people willing to run their sleds into massive snow jumps. They helped me make the pictures I wanted.

Super time of year

The Super Bowl will be here before we know it. Just one short week until the big game. As luck would have it, I will be on my way to Miami to cover the game. I couldn't be more excited. I will be blogging either here or on another blog through The News-Sentinel's web site during my trip to Miami starting on Thursday.

I am looking for Fort Wayne fans of either team that are going to the game. I would like to take some photos of the fans either at the game or before the game tailgating or just hanging out. If anyone who reads this, knows of someone, please have them email me at: cryan@news-sentinel.com

Take care, and Go Colts or Bears!

Whirlwind week

Last week was some kind of week. I photographed the UHL All-Star game at Memorial Coliseum, here in Fort Wayne. It was a good time but made for a very long night. The News-Sentinel had two of our staff photographers shooting the game and another photographer doing on-site editing and transmitting back to the office for web and print publication. Ellie Bogue and I did the shooting and Steve Linsenmayer looked through more than 1000 photos before selecting, editing, and captioning the 30 or so photos he sent to our office.

I found out on Thursday that I was approved to cover the AFC Championship game in Indianapolis. This was a big thing to me. I absolutely love football, and being selected to cover such a high-profile game was great. I tried to plan out my coverage all weekend. I wanted to find fans from the Fort Wayne area who would be at the game. Due to weather and straining my back an hour before my scheduled departure for Indy, I didn't get to do everything I wanted to at the game. In any case, I thought I made a few nice pictures. Oh, I and I got paid to be a witness to one of the best football games in NFL playoff history. What could possibly be better than that?

It turns out that our paper has applied to get me a credential to cover the Super Bowl. It is highly unlikely that I will get in, but I certainly appreciate having the chance. The NFL has strict policies for who gets to cover the Super Bowl, and I'm pretty sure the application is late, which lessens my chances. Either way it goes, I've had a great year of covering sports, and that doesn't even include the fact that my beautiful wife will be giving birth in about four months to our new son. My 10-year-old son loved his first season of basketball. Life is good.

If anyone knows of a Fort Wayne couple or family that has deep rooted, but separated allegiances to the Bears and Colts, drop me a line. I'm looking to do a photo illustration about the fact that Fort Wayne is a split town. My dad has been a lifelong fan of the Bears, and my mom has followed the Colts since they moved to Indy. I want to find maybe a husband and wife or maybe two brothers or sisters where one is a fan of the Colts and the other a fan of the Bears. The more memorabilia the people have, the better - it helps in the photos.

Take care and Go Colts or Bears!

Officially a slacker

So, my boss informed me today that I am officially a slacker. Apparently, he's correct. It seems that I haven't updated either my blog or my SportsShooter.com member page in quite some time. The only excuse I have is that I was trying to keep my head above water during the last three months. I had been working full-time, going to school full-time (15 credit hours) and trying to fulfill my duties at home. As many of you know, that is a full-time job in itself. Oh yeah, I was also assisting Fort Wayne area commercial photographer Steve Vorderman on photo shoots about once a week and sometimes more.

Enough about my self-created problems. The Spring semester is about to start, and I've decided to scale way back on the school schedule. That means I am currently not registered for any classes, but I hope to sign up before Monday for at least one class or maybe two. I am definitely not going to attempt more than two classes while working full-time again. That was rough.

In any case, I've been shooting a lot of sports lately. Football, basketball, hockey, wrestling, beach volleyball, you name it. I went out to Los Angeles for a week in November for the SportsShooter.com Academy. It was a great experience. I learned a good deal, but mostly about seeing things I wouldn't normally see and looking for interesting angles. I roomed with a good shooter, Craig Glover, from London, Ontario, Canada. The rumors are true ... Canadians do frequently use the term "eh" in everyday speech. Craig was a good guy and he nailed some beautiful shots during our time in sunny southern California.

More sports this weekend. I'm off to Indianapolis to shoot the Colts against the KC Chiefs on Saturday. Then it's back home for the Komets on Sunday. Check out the Komets game photo slideshows at The News-Sentinel.

First PAL football game

This year, my 10-year-old son decided he wanted to play football. He really wants to play ice hockey too, but that is still to be determined. In any case, My son got placed on the 49'ers of the Police Athletic League here in Fort Wayne. Watching him play takes me back to the days when I played in the PAL league. I'm still trying to figure out how to just watch my son play and not shout instructions to him. He's trying his best and having fun.

This Saturday the team had its first game of the season, so I decided to shoot some photos ... especially since it's his first game. He had a bit of trouble getting around a certain offensive lineman who was good at holding/tackling. The team lost, but it gave a solid effort. I'm looking forward to watching my son progress, and hope he will continue to enjoy it.

My son wears #84, but I posted a couple photos of some of the other kids too.

Thanks for looking.

More updates are coming

Just a couple of photos from a recent assignment on a Fort Wayne Roller Derby squad. I tried to post some vacation photos earlier today, but Blogger was clogged. That never happens, does it? Anyway, I plan to get those up by this weekend when I'm not making primitive tools for art class, shooting video for another class, working at my full-time job - The News Sentinel, or trying to spend a minute with my wife so she doesn't forget who I am.

Summer school is done!

Summer session classes are done. Unfortunately, summer is almost done too. Now it's time for a much needed vacation.
I thought I'd post a project I put together last night. This image is comprised of 18 seperate photos strategically placed. I photographed the plant in small sections with a macro lens using a technique called lightpainting. Each exposure was 20 seconds at f/7.1. I made a snoot for the flashlight to better control the direction of light. I also used colored gels over the light to enhance the colors of certain sections.

It's Official

I accepted an offer last Friday from The News-Sentinel to be a full-time staff photographer. It was a decision I struggled with because I was also a candidate for the full-time photo position with the Journal Gazette. It was really a win/win situation for me in that I knew that I would have a job in Fort Wayne. While the decision hadn't been made at the Journal Gazette, I was still in the running for their position. Ultimately, I took the position at The News-Sentinel because the staff members really seemed to want me to be part of the organization, and they went the extra mile to convince me that I should stay.

I will be working both in the photo department and with the online department. I have a lot to learn in a short time, but I'm up for the challenge. I join the staff officially on August 14, and the ffall semester at IPFW start a week later. It should certainly be interesting working full-time, going to school full-time and taking care of my duties at home.

On a side note, I will be participating the Sports Shooter Academy in Los Angeles in November. I am quite excited about this. The Academy runs for five days and will teach techniques for covering all types of sports and location portraiture. The Academy is being coordinated by Robert Hanashiro, staff photographer for USA Today. The faculty includes: Matt Brown, southern California freelance photographer, Wally Skalij, the Los Angeles Times, Donald Miralle, Getty Images, Michael Goulding, Orange County Register, Myung J. Chun, Los Angeles Times. This is a great opportunity to learrn from photographers whose images are seen in major newspapers and magazines worldwide.

Night photos

During the last few weeks I have been working on a project of night photos around Fort Wayne for a summer photography class. We had some storms roll through the area Wednesday night, and I went out in search of lightning photos. After a drive around town and an hour shooting in a parking garage, I decided to head home because I wasn't getting anything decent. Once I was at home, the lightning kicked up again and I was able to get a couple of photos from inside my garage.

I shot some night photos around diffferent venues during the Three Rivers Festival including one from the top of the Farris Wheel at Headwaters Park. I covered the 3RF fireworks from Freimann Square and got a few decent photos but I nothing spectacular.

Big things are right around the corner, and I'll provide more details on that when I have more concrete information.

Thanks for looking,
